SMF batteries — sealed, clean, and fit-and-forget.

SMF (sealed maintenance-free), also called VRLA — valve-regulated lead-acid — is a lead-acid battery you never top up with water. The electrolyte is held in place, the case is sealed, and a safety valve manages internal pressure.

That makes it the clean, convenient choice: no fumes, no watering, and safe to sit indoors beside equipment. The trade-off is that under heavy daily cycling it generally has the shortest working life of the lead-acid family.

AGM

Absorbent glass mat

The common SMF build — electrolyte held in a glass-mat separator. Good all-round performance, strong burst current, and the better value for most office and UPS backup.

Gel

Gelled electrolyte

Electrolyte set into a gel. More tolerant of deep discharge and heat, and longer-lived in tough conditions — at a higher price.

Lifespan expectations

Cared for and kept cool, an SMF bank typically gives a few years of dependable backup — at the shorter end of the lead-acid range because it is sealed and heat-sensitive.
